Overview

Implemented complete Docker containerization for the Spring Boot Circuit Breaker API, enabling easy deployment, scalability, and portability across different environments.

Files Created

  • Persistent volumes
  • Health checks enabled

Features: - Service dependencies with health checks - Persistent data volumes - Isolated network - Environment variable configuration - Automatic restart policies

Configuration Options

Environment Variables

Variable Default Description
SPRING_PROFILES_ACTIVE docker Active profile
SPRING_DATA_MONGODB_URI mongodb://mongodb:27017/sampledb MongoDB URI
SPRING_SECURITY_USER_NAME user Basic auth username
SPRING_SECURITY_USER_PASSWORD password Basic auth password
LOGGING_LEVEL_COM_ANR INFO Log level
JAVA_OPTS -Xmx512m -Xms256m JVM options

Custom Configuration

Create docker-compose.override.yml:

version: '3.8'

services:
  app:
    environment:
      - JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx1g -Xms512m
      - LOGGING_LEVEL_COM_ANR=DEBUG
    ports:
      - "9090:8080"

Production Deployment

Security Checklist

  • Change default credentials
  • Use secrets management
  • Enable HTTPS (reverse proxy)
  • Don't expose MongoDB externally
  • Use specific image tags (not latest)
  • Scan images for vulnerabilities
  • Implement network policies
  • Enable audit logging

Performance Tuning

services:
  app:
    environment:
      # Increase heap for production
      - JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx2g -Xms1g -XX:+UseG1GC
    deploy:
      resources:
        limits:
          cpus: '2'
          memory: 2.5G
        reservations:
          cpus: '1'
          memory: 1G

High Availability

# Scale application horizontally
docker-compose up -d --scale app=3

# Use load balancer (nginx, traefik)
# Add health check endpoints
# Implement graceful shutdown

Monitoring

Health Checks

Application:

curl http://localhost:8080/actuator/health

MongoDB:

docker-compose exec mongodb mongosh --eval "db.adminCommand('ping')"

Metrics

# Resource usage
docker stats

# Application metrics
curl http://localhost:8080/actuator/metrics

Logging

# Follow logs
docker-compose logs -f app

# Export logs
docker-compose logs --no-color > application.log

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

1. Port already in use

# Change port in docker-compose.yml
ports:
  - "9090:8080"

2. MongoDB connection failed

# Check MongoDB is running
docker-compose ps mongodb

# Check logs
docker-compose logs mongodb

3. Out of memory

# Increase heap size
JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx1g -Xms512m

4. Build fails

# Clean build
./gradlew clean
docker-compose build --no-cache

Testing

Build Test

# Build image
docker-compose build

# Verify image
docker images | grep sprboot-api-cktbrkr

Run Test

# Start services
docker-compose up -d

# Wait for health check
sleep 30

# Test endpoint
curl http://localhost:8080/actuator/health

# Cleanup
docker-compose down -v
