Optional Enhancements Implementation - October 17, 2025¶
Overview¶
This document details the implementation of two optional enhancements from the PENDING_ACTIONS.md file: 1. Java 21 Virtual Threads 2. ArchUnit Test Enhancements
1. Java 21 Virtual Threads ✅¶
Implementation¶
File Modified: src/main/resources/application.properties
Configuration Added:
##------------------------------------------------
## Java 21 Virtual Threads Configuration
##------------------------------------------------
# Enable virtual threads for improved I/O performance and resource utilization
spring.threads.virtual.enabled=true
Benefits¶
- Improved Throughput: Better performance for I/O-bound operations
- Resource Utilization: More efficient use of system resources
- Simplified Concurrency: Easier concurrent programming model
- Zero Code Changes: Automatic improvement with just configuration
Technical Details¶
- Virtual threads are a Java 21 feature (Project Loom)
- Lightweight threads managed by the JVM
- Ideal for applications with many concurrent I/O operations
- Spring Boot 3.2+ provides native support via
spring.threads.virtual.enabled
Impact¶
- Risk: Low - No breaking changes
- Effort: 5 minutes
- Reward: High for I/O-heavy workloads
2. ArchUnit Test Enhancements ✅¶
Implementation¶
File Created: src/test/java/com/anr/architecture/ArchitectureTest.java
Test Count: 16 comprehensive architecture validation tests
Test Coverage¶
Layer Architecture Tests¶
- Layered Architecture Validation
- Enforces controller → service → repository dependency flow
- Allows logging layer to access controllers
- Prevents circular dependencies
Naming Convention Tests¶
- Controller Naming
-
Controllers must end with "Controller" suffix
-
Service Naming
-
Service classes ending with "Service" must be properly annotated
-
Repository Naming
- Repository classes ending with "Repository" must be properly annotated
Dependency Rules Tests¶
- Controller Dependencies
-
Controllers should only depend on services, models, and framework classes
-
Service Isolation
-
Services must not depend on controllers
-
Repository Isolation
- Repositories must not depend on services or controllers
Annotation Tests¶
- Controller Annotations
-
Controllers must use @RestController or @Controller
-
Service Annotations
-
Services must use @Component or @Service
-
Repository Annotations
- Repositories must use @Component or @Repository
Package Organization Tests¶
-
Configuration Package
- Config classes must reside in config package
-
Exception Package
- Exception classes must reside in exception package
-
Model Restrictions
- Model classes should not have Spring annotations
-
Logging Package
- Logging classes must reside in logging package
-
Aspect Package
- Aspect classes must reside in logging or config packages
Code Quality Tests¶
- Deprecated API Detection
- No classes should use deprecated APIs
Architecture Validated¶

Benefits¶
- Architecture Compliance: Ensures code follows defined architecture patterns
- Continuous Validation: Tests run automatically with every build
- Documentation: Tests serve as living documentation of architecture rules
- Refactoring Safety: Prevents accidental architecture violations during refactoring
- Team Alignment: Enforces consistent coding standards across the team
Technical Details¶
- Framework: ArchUnit 1.2.1
- Integration: JUnit 5
- Scope: All production code in
com.anrpackage - Execution: Runs with standard test suite

16 tests completed, 16 passed
Summary¶
Completed Enhancements¶
- ✅ Java 21 Virtual Threads enabled
- ✅ ArchUnit architecture tests implemented (16 tests)
- ✅ All tests passing
- ✅ Documentation updated
Test Statistics¶
- Total Tests: 25 (9 existing + 16 new ArchUnit tests)
- Pass Rate: 100%
- Architecture Tests: 16
- Functional Tests: 9
Next Steps (Optional)¶
The following enhancements from PENDING_ACTIONS.md remain available: - Containerization (Dockerfile) - CI/CD Pipeline - MongoDB Test Integration (Testcontainers) - Observability Enhancement - Performance Testing - API Versioning Strategy - Logging Enhancement - Security Enhancement
3. Spring Annotation Refactoring ✅¶
Implementation¶
Files Modified:
- src/main/java/com/anr/service/ProductService.java
- src/main/java/com/anr/service/MemberService.java
- src/main/java/com/anr/service/CollectionUpload.java
- src/main/java/com/anr/localmdb/repository/ProductRepository.java
- src/main/java/com/anr/localmdb/repository/MemberRepository.java
- src/test/java/com/anr/architecture/ArchitectureTest.java
Changes Made¶
- Services: Replaced
@Componentwith@Service(3 classes) - Repositories: Replaced
@Componentwith@Repository(2 interfaces) - ArchUnit Tests: Updated to enforce strict
@Serviceand@Repositoryusage
Benefits¶
- Semantic Clarity: Code is more self-documenting
- Best Practices: Follows Spring Framework recommendations
- Exception Translation:
@Repositoryenables automatic exception translation - Architecture Enforcement: ArchUnit tests now strictly validate proper annotations
- Better Tooling: IDEs and analysis tools can better understand component roles
Impact¶
- Risk: None - Fully backward compatible
- Effort: 15 minutes
- Value: High - Improved code quality and maintainability
Test Results¶
- All 25 tests passing (16 architecture + 9 functional)
- Architecture rules now enforce proper stereotype annotations
